More on the Duo:
Larry & Joe is the duo of Joropo maestro Larry BellorÃn (Monagas, Venezuela), GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass, and old-time star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, upright bass, guitar, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their bilingual (esp/eng) program includes storytelling, humor, and singalongs.
Larry & Joe were destined to make music together.
Larry BellorÃn hails from Monagas, Venezuela, and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and old-time musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. After a decade in South America, Joe got stranded back in his stomping grounds during the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum-seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe.
Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo, they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on the harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions and storytelling about how music and social movements coalesce.
The hour with Larry & Joe was sort of like being in the eye of a hurricane. Beauty and order in the heart of chaos. There was considerable buzz about these guys, but I donât think anyone anticipated their true impact, and the huge gathering [â¦] had an explosive response. – The Austin Chronicle

When I saw Larry & Joe [â¦] it seemed like theyâd known each other their whole lives. That easy familiarity has also served the music well. Nuevo South Train is a magnificent blending of the duos’ multicultural experiences, and I guarantee youâve never heard anything like it. And if they play anywhere near you, get there. – Twangville
Though their bios feature a bounty of bummers, the music they make together (self-described as Latingrass) is nothing short of delightful. Ever been curious to hear what a banjo and harp sound like together? A hoedown with maracas? Make sure to make time for this pair and find out as they make some of the sincerest, comforting, fun, and welcoming music you’ll ever enjoy hearing. – BLANK
