Shakespeare Page and Stage Workshop
April 23 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
$15Have you ever wanted to learn Shakespeare? Or try out acting?
We have a fun workshop series coming to the BBCC—starting April 23rd (Shakespeare’s Birthday!) at 7:30 p.m.! This is for you if you’ve ever wanted to learn some Shakespeare!
This approach combines acting and academics: the group will study a piece of Shakespeare’s work on the page and then work it out on the stage. This workshop will explore and perform a small piece of Shakespeare at the end, just for participants. (Though you can also observe if you’re stage-shy.)
In Shakespeare’s day, shows didn’t have directors as we know them. That left actors to figure out how to play the roles themselves. Shakespeare wrote his scripts with clues and subtle road maps in the text for the actors to pick up what he wanted.
This first workshop will focus on Hamlet’s 3.1 address to the Players: “Speak the speech, I pray you…” This will help us uncover what might have been Shakespeare’s notes to his performers.
Attendees will learn some performance techniques and some comprehension tricks. Script excerpts and take-home material will be provided. Please RSVP to attend, as space is limited! The sliding scale suggested a donation of $15.
Presented by Kelly Burr, Founder of Ground Up Shakespeare and Scene 24 Productions.
(Academically published as Kelly Nelsen-Pedersen) Kelly holds a master’s degree from The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon, U.K., where her concentration was on gender roles in Shakespeare’s work.
